I published my first book, a collaboration with Margaret Docherty, way back in 2004 entitled Simply Felt. My first love has always been the exploration of textile techniques and I wanted to share these ideas through simple project books.
I have always been impatient and love the idea of textile projects that are quick and easy, the process of making is so good for the mind and it’s wonderful to be a able to use and enjoy your creations . I wrote both The Impatient Patchworker and The Impatient Embroiderer in 2006 and enjoyed sharing my ideas with many people via The Knitting and Stitching Shows, The Festival of Quilts and Liberty of London.
New from Old, a book dedicated to up-cycling your wardrobe followed later that year. I loved writing this as shortly after leaving Central St Martins I had my own ‘zero waste’ fashion label called Salvage and environmental issues are incredibly important to me.
By 2009 I had discovered a new textile technique called needle felting. I wanted to use it for embellishing my fabrics and found there were so many possibilities. I approached Interweave (who had published Simply felt) and suggested I write Simply Needle Felt, they agreed and my next book was born. I still love needle felting and taught Kirstie Allsopp how to do it on her TV programme ‘Kirstie’s Handmade Britain’.
Fast forward 10 years and the lovely Rachel Henderson asked me to co author a book with her. The colourful Boho Felt Crafts was such a joy to collaborate on.
I am currently brewing my next book. Expect more techniques but with a focus on experiments and ‘Fabric Recipes’ rather than completed projects…
